A few weeks ago, Lord Sugar embarked upon his annual search for a Young Apprentice. Now in its third series, twelve contestants aged 16-17 are going head-to-head in a number of business challenges, as they compete for Sugar’s £25,000 business development fund designed to kick-start their careers.

Well, we are also on the hunt for a Young Apprentice at BHP – except there are a few key differences (feel free to listen to this anyway whilst you read)
* The search for our Young Apprentice isn’t nationwide – we’ve decided to look much closer to home and will be offering an apprenticeship to a talented student from the City of Bristol College.
* The interview process isn’t televised – we wouldn’t be that mean! Instead, we’ve teamed up with the Apprenticeship team at City of Bristol College, to help us find an appropriate candidate.
*Our apprentice won’t have to relocate. We don’t want our successful candidate to have to travel too far to work, which was another reason for teaming up with City of Bristol College. The successful candidate will spend four days a week working in our office near Temple Meads, and the other day will be spent at the college getting all the mentoring and additional support they need from their tutors.
*Our successful candidate won’t win £25,000 – but they will get the opportunity to work with us for 1-2 years, and add some vital experience and skills to their CV.
* The young apprentice won’t meet Lord Sugar, but they will get to work with our sweet Bristol-based team (tenuous, sorry!). We’re looking for someone to work predominantly with our web and communications team, but they will also be assisting our business development, marketing and project management teams. They’ll also help our CEO Rory MccGwire with tasks from time to time – but he doesn’t sit in a scary boardroom!

*We’ve widened the age range for our search – our successful candidate will be aged between 16 and 24. This gives a wide range of students at City of Bristol College the opportunity to become our young apprentice.
*They will be paid. Unlike Lord Sugar’s candidates, our apprentice will be on our payroll, which is another great benefit of the apprenticeship scheme.
*We won’t throw our apprentice in at the deep end – we’re looking for a candidate with enthusiasm and a can-do attitude, but they won’t be required to project manage tasks like they do on the Young Apprentice. They will mainly be helping us update our Donut websites and blogs, manage our databases, and look after our social media.
*They won’t get fired! Mistakes are inevitable in the workplace, but learning from them is a key part of personal development, so we won’t be terminating the contract of our successful candidate unless they do something really awful (which shouldn’t be viewed as a challenge!!)
